Chopin: Piano Sonata no.3 in B minor op.58
Rachmaninoff's infamous G minor prelude opens this programme. It was the first of his 10 Preludes op.23 to be written - a good two years earlier than any of the others. It was written at a pivotal point in the composer's life, as he was beginning to recover from a crippling depression that had made composing almost impossible for him. This is followed by the exquisitely atmospheric 'sunken cathedral' prelude by Debussy, evoking images of colossal bells in an old submerged cathedral, chiming away deep underwater.
